Heres some info about St Peter’S Chirch. . .

St Peter’s church, Belper was opened in 1824 in response to a growing population after the Industrial Revolution and also in thanks for peace after the war (it is one of those known as Waterloo churches).

The building comprises nave, chancel, north and south galleries plus a lofty, pinnacled tower and, after several alterations, seats around 700.

The organ is of particular interest and attracts many visitors; built-in 1853 by William Holt of Bradford, enlarged in 1873 which increased the swell organ from 42 to 54 notes, then fully restored and re-commissioned in 1978.

The Church contains memorials to George Brettles, founder of the local firm of that name and also Jedediah Strutt and members of the Strutt family linked to the mills in the town. Also of interest is the laid up banner of the Belper Militia from the time of the battle of Waterloo.

St Peter’s is the largest church in the busy industrial and commuter town of Belper which makes an ideal setting for the major civic events e.g. St Georges Day and Remembrance Sunday.

The church extends a warm welcome to visitors. The church is a particularly peaceful place to seek quiet prayer and reflection.
